How to Save Money on Groceries: Tips for Staying on Budget in the Store

Updated: Dec 15, 2024

In today's economy food prices are on the rise. It is becoming increasingly difficult to stay within a budget while trying to provide the necessary nutrition for your family. As prices inflate, the more vigilant we must be about saving a few dollars where we can. Let’s talk about ways to help us stay on budget while grocery shopping.

Make a List

Write out a list and stick to it. If you're anything like me, I’m a planner and I like strategy. Before I go to the grocery store or order my groceries, I plan my meals for the next week or two. This way I’m not walking through the store aimlessly, which will lead to spending more money.

Coupons (Paper and Digital)

I haven’t always been good at this, but I have started actually looking at the coupon advertisements that come in the mail. I also utilize the digital coupon section on my grocery apps. There are some grocery stores that will conduct digital sales on particular items online only just to promote their app. If you are using a digital coupon, normally you can redeem them in the store. You do not have to exclusively purchase your items online to redeem those coupons.

Eat Before You Go

This is so real! Do not go to the grocery store hungry. You will buy unnecessary items.

Purchase in Bulk

Costco is one of my favorite stores to shop for items in bulk. I utilize Costco for any item that my family uses on a regular basis and items that I can freeze. Here are some common household items that you might want to buy in bulk depending on your family’s needs:

  • Toilet paper

  • Paper towel

  • Veggies (freeze them)

  • Meats (break down and freeze)

  • Sliced Bread (yes, you can freeze bread)

  • Canned goods

  • Milk (freeze)

  • Snacks (chips, cookies, crackers)

  • Dish soap

  • Laundry detergent

  • Bar soap

  • Diapers

  • Wipes

  • Formula

This can save you tons of money!

Compare Prices

Saving money takes time and preparation. One thing I like to do is compare prices for certain items at different stores. For example, if I notice that Ralph’s is having a sale on steak, I compare that price to the steak at Vons or Albertsons just to make sure it’s a good deal.

Name brand vs. Generic

Usually generic brands are less expensive than name brand items. This may work for you. Usually there is no difference in the quality or taste of the generic vs. name brand item. Do your research and compare!

Loyalty Member

Sometimes loyalty rewards programs are not worth your time but sometimes they are. Take the time to read through what a store will offer their members. If you shop at a specific grocery store on a regular basis, consider signing up for their rewards program. Most times it just takes entering an email address or phone number. Then you receive exclusive discounts or coupons tailored to your most frequently purchased items.

Government Programs

Depending on your household situation, there are government programs that can help supply food for your family. For example, if you have children under the age of five and you meet the income requirements there is a program called WIC in the state of California. Research the income based food programs in your area. Do not be afraid or ashamed for utilizing these programs.

Encouragement

I know all of these ideas take time and preparation, but you and your wallet will benefit from the money you are saving. It’s tough providing for your family, but do your best to use the resources that are available to you. As always mommas, YOU GOT THIS!
