Designing Your Homeschool Space

Updated: Jan 14

As you can tell by now, I am all about being creative and supporting individuality when it comes to homeschooling.  If you are like me, sometimes it's nice to have a few ideas to get those creative juices flowing.  Now that you have decided to begin your homeschool journey, or maybe you are jut looking to refresh your space, we are going to talk about some essentials that should be incorporated into your homeschool space.

  1. Everything in your homeschool space should be child friendly. I am a firm believer that as a homeschool family, everything in the learning space should be touchable, playable, engaging and  intentional.  This is their space.  When they see it as their space, they are excited to engage with it and learning will be fun for them!  Here are some suggestions to create a lively, educational and interactive environment.

    1. Circle Time Rug: this is great because it can be easily movable if you have a small space you need to transform each day.  It is their designated spot where school or a portion of school takes place and it's just a cozy place to sit.

    2. Classroom Calendar Chart: We use this every single day and the kids love to change the date and interact with all of the prompts.

    3. All About Letters Chart: This is an item we also use everyday as a part of our circle time and opener to the rest of our lesson.  I also try to incorporate a game surrounding the letter or word of the day.

    4. All About Numbers: This is a vibrant addition your kids will love to interact with daily.

    5. Daily Affirmations: I don’t know about you but sometimes you need to encourage yourself and your kids need encouragement too!

  2. Organization: organization systems are everything in homeschooling. Being organized will help you stay clear headed, lessen the feeling of being overwhelmed and will help your children be responsible for accessing their school materials.

    1. Rolling Cart: If you're like me and have a shared homeschool space, then being mobile is important.

    2. Storage Drawers: If you are into arts and crafts, need storage for small items, pens, pencils this is the solution for storage and organization.

    3. File Storage: Whether you are homeschooling one child or multiple children you will need to store and organize files.  This is something you can hang on a wall, slide under a bed or fold up into a space in a closet. If you feel like you need something a little larger, this file cabinet is a great option, as well.

  3. Set the Mood: Think about the mood you want to create within your classroom.  This mood may change throughout the day depending on how focused and attuned you need your child to be.  I play a lot of music throughout the day to set a specific mood.  In the morning, I like to play more calming worshipful music.  Sometimes it is instrumentals and sometimes it's not.  When we are doing arts and crafts or something more playful, I love to play some of their favorite upbeat songs.

Conclusion: My hope is that this list will help you get started and help you feel confident in beginning or continuing on your journey. As always mamas, you got this! If you need any further help do not hesitate to submit a contact form.

I love how you said that your homeschooling area should be child friendly. That means not Pinterest perfect but perfect for your kiddos!
